Food—the great equalizer—calms the ill at ease, placates the inflamed, befriends the lonely, refreshes the weary and brings peace to the table . . . if only for a moment. It is as if it possesses a magical quality that few other things in life can achieve. Many squabbles and differences have been settled over a meal and a drink.
